I’m Demetra Karos … I’m from Minneapolis … I go to school here at Loyola … I’m a freshman … er … I’m a junior … I’m not a freshman (laughter) … I’m studying International business … with a minor in Chinese and Art history … I’m interning at Rosenthal Fine Art … with … Harry … So … I chose International business because I love to travel … I love to see different cultures and how … each one is different with different people inside of it … And … I’ve been studying Chinese since Kindergarten … so … I think it would be pointless to stop now … since I’ve gone this far … and then … Art History … I love art … but I don’t necessarily want to do it … but I love the history behind it … and the whole world around it … and the business of to … I want to combine … somehow … the international aspect of art … and maybe bring in some kind of Chinese involvement to it … That’s what I would like to do … Art … I like oil painting … Impressions … I actually like Pop art … anything fun and new … Anything different … that has a lot of colors … I like realistic things … but I also like imaginary things … with amazing brushstrokes … things like that … I like business … and I like science … and I think it’s good … to have that … but I also love … doing art … I did art in high school … I painted … So … I wanted to do that … but I didn’t want to necessarily want to paint … like I said before … So … I think combining two things together is really cool … because … I think I can have … hopefully have a career involving art and business … My sister Theadora … we both have always loved art and wanted to do something in it … but I never really thought about what I wanted to do with it … I’ve always looked at more of the business side of it … I think then her … I could see myself maybe doing art law … I don’t know … I think our whole family really loves art … we’d always go see every museum when we traveled … I think we’ve always … always loved it … We’ve traveled in Greece … Obviously … Seen the Parthenon museum and all the ancient sites … Which I love … I love ancient history … and ancient art … We’ve been to Rome and seen museums in Florence and Venice … Rome … All those places … I love the art there … Paris … obviously … I forgot Paris … the biggest one … I love that … I mean … you can’t beat that … I love all the places where the architecture itself … is art … which I think is different then here … and it’s been around for thousands of years … which is amazing … And then obviously … the museums in Chicago … Minneapolis … California … D.C. … Everywhere … I think the museums in Europe … You can’t compare them … to anything else … And … I’m going to study in Nice … South of France … I’ve never been there … but I’ve been to Paris … So it will be a different experience … because I’ve never been to the south of France … So I think it will give me a different take on the culture … I’ve been to the bigger areas … like France … Italy … Greece … so I think this will be a new side of Europe that I’ve never seen … I’ll be more in a place where I can see how locals live … in France … not necessarily the tourist scene of it … specially because it’s going to be in Spring where it’s off season … I know there’s a Matisse museum there … It will be a whole different experience … I think … then I would get when I’m just traveling with my family … I’ll be taking whatever courses they offer … You can’t work either … because you don’t have a visa … Instead of working … I’ll be traveling on the weekends … to different countries … and see as much art as possible there … But yeah … I’ll be traveling and seeing other cultures … There’s not one specific thing that you have to focus on there … because the courses are pretty broad … you’ll have religion … history … science … that type of thing … Now I’m living in Chicago … When I initially came here … I didn’t really want to come to Chicago at first … I had this image of going to California and being in a warm place … with a beach … and that whole thing … But I came here because I really didn’t apply to that many schools … and I didn’t know what I wanted to do … So I came … and I didn’t really like it at first … because I always had something against cities … big cities … for some reason … I guess coming from Minnesota … where we lived in a city … but it was more like … there’s nature all around us … there’s not buildings everywhere … Then after the first year … I was going to transfer … but the thought of going to a new place … and making completely new friends … at a new school … and starting again basically as a freshman … I did not want to do that … It just didn’t sound like fun … So I stuck it out one more year … and it turns out that I love it now … Because there’s so much more opportunity here then there is … lets say in California I think … especially in the art world … And I like the Midwest … I love the people here … I think they’re honest people … You can find good friends … that are … really kind … and have good hearts … It turned out well … but at first it was really hard … especially being away from family … But I have my sister here … So that’s good … and it’s really close to home … so it’s not too far … Also … at first I didn’t want to go to Loyola because my sister went here … because … me … Theadora … and Alexandra … my younger sister … we do every thing together … so I kind of wanted some separation … But then … once I was in school … I could never go to school without her … It’s so much fun … We go home together … we hang out here … It’s really fun … yeah … she’s my best friend … same with my little sister … Yeah … we do everything together … we’re like a pack … we come as a pack … It’s fun that we get to work together too … That’s awesome … Our family’s really close … so it’s fun that we get to do everything together … and it makes it easier to do things … just because we have a home base here … not just in Minneapolis … Forming a company with my sister … I think it would be perfect … I know our little sister … oh … Our mom always talks about it … all the time … she wants us all in the same spot too … I think it would be amazing … I’d love to work with them … And it could work out really well … we all get along … we fight … but all in good health … I think we all have different … we all bring different things to the table … I think Theadora … I don’t know (laughter) … we all have different qualities … I’m usually brutally honest … Theadora’s really good with people … Our little sister is super realistic about things … I think all of our different characteristics would work well … I think we all have different interests in the art world … I don’t know what we would do … but I think it would mesh together well … But I don’t know specifically what we could do … I’ve thought about it … for sure … My thoughts on gender inequalities … For me … I think being raised in a home with three girls … and a mom … I was really exposed to … I didn’t really feel inequality at all … and my school was really tiny … I was in school from Kindergarten to twelfth grade with about 100 kids in each grade … The opportunities for us were really equal … I would say … In high school I was in this group … It was a group that was funded by NASA … And redid different projects every year … Five kids were selected from the high school … and they were all girls … which was kind of cool … five selected girls … in a science role … which was really cool … because usually … I think that’s associated with men … For me … I’ve seen change … but also … I’m just getting into … I guess you could say the workforce … so I’ve not really been exposed … inequality … to it too much … But I definitely know that other people struggle as woman in the work force … especially in business … or science careers … I think I’ve been lucky enough that I haven’t really … experienced that yet … but I’m also … not … in a job right now … I’m a student … But it’s a real issue … Will I pursue a further degree? … I’d like to … I still don’t really know what I would like to do … But I would love to continue my education further … I don’t know if I’d do it in Chicago … or somewhere else … I don’t know what I’d get a degree in … but … I definitely want to do more … I don’t want to just stop after next year … Yeah … I think more education … I feel excited in life … I just have to figure out what I want to do … My use of …Social media … I definitely use Instagram … Snapchat … Facebook … But … for me … it kind of came into my life when I was … probably in … ninth grade … so … the beginning of high school … I definitely had a childhood … with minimal use of social media … But … compared to kids now … like our little sister … who … literally has had snapchat since she was in fifth grade … Is crazy about it … can’t put her phone down … The kids I babysit … once they get a phone … they can’t hear you … I think for me … it’s a big part of my life … but I also know what it’s like not to have it … I think I’m probably … one of the last of a generation … to experience a childhood with minimal use … not no use … but minimal use … of technology and social media … But yeah … It’s crazy … the kids now … they can’t put their … they’re addicted … It’s a full on addiction … Which is really sad … I think now … it’s a reality that … every organization … and company … has to have it to succeed … It’s just … everyone has it … you have to now … for me … I like Instagram … because Facebook … your thoughts get drowned in other things … it gets … kind of junky … But Instagram … you can just communicate what you want to say through … your images … And you can have images that aren’t permanent … they’ll last for a day … Snapchat … I like it … but … it’s not great … I don’t know … I just think it’s … it’s strange that people communicate … only on Snapchat … They’ll only talk to people on Snapchat … but not in person … I think that’s very strange … I think it’s part of business … but it’s definitely … it’s hard … because people care so much about how … they look on social media … what pictures they post … how they look in the pictures … all of that … Which I think has a really negative impact on how people look at themselves … and what they prioritize … People can change … literally … how their face looks … and their body looks … horrible … for their self-confidence … But I think … It’s a sad reality … that that’s where the world is heading … it’s inevitable … But yeah … it definitely has a negative impact on people … on how they see themselves and other people … It gives false perceptions on how they should look … especially young girls … Socializing off social media … Just hang out … Get some good food … Go to restaurants … Just relax … Not watch … It’s nice just to sit there and not watch TV …or anything electronic … let your mind think for a little bit … that’s the best thing … I like just being with my family … being out with them … cooking … traveling … drawing … Just simple things … One place I’d really like to spend some time in … Florence … I wanted to study broad there … but my School wouldn’t let me … That’s the one place I want to go … I’ve been … but I want to study there so badly … and spend a long period of time … because they have amazing art … the culture’s amazing … it’s the best city … I was there four days … but that wasn’t long enough to explore it … So … That’s where I would go … I’m optimistic … Just got to make a plan …
